Job Opening - Water Operator

CITY OF COLBY
WATER OPERATOR POSITION

The City of Colby is seeking a skilled and motivated Water Operator to join our Public Works Department. This position works under the direct supervision of the Public Works Director and plays a key role in supporting the maintenance, operation, and administration of the City’s Water Utility.

Description of Duties

  • Install, maintain, repair and replace water services including installing and flushing water mains, service valves and hydrants;
  • Remove, install, reset and perform field repair to water meters;
  • Read meters, install radio reads, records findings and maintain all records pertaining to completed service calls;
  • Diggers Hotline Locates
  • Operates jack-hammers, chain saws, weed eaters, hand picks, shovels, brooms, rakes, pitch forks, pruner, cut saw, vibrating skid plate tampers, and other miscellaneous hand tools.
  • Test/operator emergency equipment
  • Operates snow control equipment
  • Operates dump trucks in a wide variety of Public Work’s maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Maintain all municipal property including, but not limited to, mowing, fertilizing, de-weeding, brushing, landscaping, ditching, painting and other minor building repairs.
  • Perform regular service rounds that include inspection of wells, elevated tanks, and all building and equipment related to the water system;
  • This position requires heavy lifting – up to 100 lbs
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other city personnel and the public
  • Responsible for completing and submitting all DNR reports
  • Collect water samples as required by the Department of Natural Resources regulations.
  • Test for residual disinfection and be able to use results for chemical feed adjustment.
  • Will be required to operate and be responsible for the safe and efficient operations of the city’s equipment.
  • Perform work in the installation, maintenance and operation of a complete water plant and distribution system and sewer plant/collection system which includes but not limited to daily lab testing requirements of water/waste water, inspection of wells, elevated tanks, lift station and all buildings and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Off-Shift On-Call

  • Participate in the on-call rotation for weekend testing (approximately every 4 weeks).
  • Participate in the on-call Holiday rotation.
  • Diagnose customer and distribution system emergencies and take immediate action.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Experience or certification in water treatment operations. Heavy equipment experience.
  • Working knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in public works and water utility maintenance.
  • Valid Wisconsin CDL or ability to obtain.
  •  Radom Drug Testing

Required Certifications

Must obtain and maintain Wisconsin DNR Water and Wastewater Operator certifications within one year of hire (employer paid).

Compensation

Salary Range: $27.90 - $30.90 per hour, depending on knowledge, skills, and experience.
